"What makes Metriport particularly valuable is the useful summary view it provides for each patient, with deduplicated information that makes the data immediately actionable. The medical record summary aspect is crucial—it takes the same connections that athenaOne® has but presents the information in a way that's actually useful for our clinical team."
Q: Tell us about knownwell: What is your mission, and what makes you unique?
A: knownwell is a healthcare provider designed specifically for people living with obesity. Many of these individuals have struggled to find care that treats them as whole people rather than just a number on the scale. We want to be more than just a prescribing hub for weight loss medications—we aim to be the place someone goes for all their healthcare needs, whether or not their goal is to actively lose weight.
Q: What challenges were you facing in your clinical workflow before implementing Metriport?
A: Before using Metriport, getting historical medical records for new patients was extremely difficult and time-consuming. The process often involved navigating multiple health system portals, submitting requests, and waiting for responses. When we received a response, this would typically be a 100-200 page fax from other providers! In the worst cases, we'd make multiple requests, even asking patients to request records from their doctors, and still sometimes receive nothing.
While athenaOne's built-in Health Information Exchange (HIE) connections pulled similar data, it wasn't presented in a useful format—each record was its own document, with duplicate information across raw files that required extensive manual searching to find relevant information. On average, our team spent one hour per patient trying to chase down these records, often with incomplete results. This approach wasn't just inefficient—it was unsustainable as we looked to scale our care model.
Q: How have you integrated Metriport into your athenaOne workflows?
A: Metriport's integration with athenaOne has transformed our approach to medical record retrieval. The system now automatically looks ahead on our schedule and queries HIE a week in advance to find records for upcoming patients. When our team begins chart preparation, Metriport is the first place we check.
What makes Metriport particularly valuable is the useful summary view it provides for each patient, with deduplicated information that makes the data immediately actionable. The medical record summary aspect is crucial—it takes the same connections that athenaOne has but presents the information in a way that's actually useful for our clinical team.
Q: Were there any surprising insights when you first began using Metriport?
A: We were genuinely shocked by the depth and quality of the data. Out of our first 200 patients, almost all had hundreds of documents returned, creating remarkably comprehensive summaries for each individual. We had expected significant gaps in the data, but instead found coverage in the high 90% range—far exceeding our expectations.
Q: How has Metriport helped knownwell deliver on its mission?
A: Metriport has addressed two critical challenges for us: comprehensive record coverage and operational efficiency. By saving us an hour of manual work per new patient, we've dramatically improved our operations while ensuring we have the complete information needed to provide truly personalized care.
This efficiency is essential to our growth model. We'll never be able to help millions of people living with obesity if we had to manage all these processes manually—it's simply not scalable. Having Metriport's technology allows us to maintain our high-quality care standards while expanding our reach.
Beyond the time savings, having complete records means we can focus our patient visits on providing care rather than data collection. We're now in the process of making our visits more efficient, eliminating wasted time spent gathering information that we can access directly through medical records.
Q: What future possibilities do you see with Metriport's data?
A: Beyond the immediate benefits to our clinical operations, we're excited about using Metriport's structured FHIR data to enhance our clinical decision support systems and analytics capabilities. While athenaOne allows us to view patient data, Metriport enables us to pull records into our clinical decision support tools, run sophisticated analytics, and automate workflows in ways that weren't possible before.
As we continue to grow with new clinic locations and expand our care model, having this reliable data foundation will be essential to maintaining the personalized approach that defines the knownwell experience.
